filming

One thing that helped me when filming for my cartoon caper film was the shot list I had on hand when shooting. I could make changes, refer back to it and confidently know what shots I need for my film. I made this and made notes on it before filming, for both audio and visuals and anything I may not think about when on set.

My original storyboard

choosing my location;

location 1

location 2

I wanted to view both the locations I had in mind before recording to see what was best. They were very similar however the second location had a better atmosphere and more to work with within the woods, overall this was a much better layout for what I wanted to film.

filming;

I decided I wanted practice using a camera as I don't have a lot of experience with camera work and it's features. I wanted to see the result I came out with, with the knowledge I had. I took a tripod and my storyboard and after finding okay weather went out to film my shots.

Above are some behind scenes photos from my time going out shooting. Overall I think filming was both successful and unsuccessful. The cold weather proved to be difficult to overcome however I was still able to get most of the shots possible. I faced a lot of challenges whilst filming. This extends from generally needing more knowledge on how my camera works to environment issues, where I mis-judged landscape where I was filming and therefore had to adapt or either miss shots I thought would be easy to edit in post but when looking at was more complex this could be due to the amount of branches in the way of a shot I thought I could get etc. I did face many problems but I think my biggest was getting to grips with the focus settings on the camera and the other settings. I want to follow tutorials on this specific camera so I can see it's full potential after looking at the footage it is quite out of focus or too exposed which I can try and edit in premiere or after effects. There were other issues however I think this was also a success as I learnt a lot from this experience. Next time I will record not in chronological order but in order of shots that are most like each other, as there was a lot of running around which took a lot of time. I want to learn how to use my camera to its full potential, and also will get another person to act next time as there was also a lot of running around due to me being the actor, recording myself. Overall I feel this was both a successful and unsuccessful recording session as I was not happy with the footage I got, which will require quite a bit of editing in post to reach the standard I want to go for.

This is one example of my storyboard not being realistic to the environment. I wanted to have this shot from the characters POV but too many branches were in the way, in the first photo there are too many branches too realistically mask out, this would be too time consuming so I had to take a different angle and use the send one as a small amount of masking will need to be done but it wont give the effect I hoped for.

On another example is this shot where I wanted the phone in focus and was unable to do this without knowing the proper camera settings, therefore I will use this shot along with one filmed on my phone that is in focus.

I wasn't happy with the footage from the start. after playing with the settings I got a clearer picture. After coming home I realised the first batch of footage was very different from the rest which is a problem when putting the footage together. I will try to fix this in Premiere.

This is an example of a shot I like. I feel the close-up of the feet works a lot better than the bottom of the leg. I was unable to do this exactly as planned due to having to be away from the camera, therefore I could not pan out of the shot as I was walking. However I do feel this was still a successful shot.

practicing camera work

The first video I learnt more about some of the buttons on the camera. The Q button being a quick menu where we can adjust filters and general photo options. I also learnt about the shutter adjusting the light that comes into the camera. And about the live mode and drive mode on the camera. The live mode showing the image on screen and the drive mode giving photo shooting options and timers. This mainly applies to taking photos. The main thing the next video taught me was the main ways to get the subject at hand into focus.
