Evaluation

When researching web design I used two websites to search for portfolios that previous users had made, the main one being called Dribble. These websites allowed me to access a wide range of websites that artists had made. I took screenshots of these websites, selecting ones I found interesting whether that be ones I liked or didn't. I then investigated the pros and cons of the website designs, thus helping me realise what could be good for my website. During the research stage I learnt how things such as the font , to text colour, to basic layout etc has a massive impact on the overall image of the webpage. After looking at the webpages for a while I started to notice how small colour obstructions affected the work. I learnt that a little can be more affected than a lot in many situations so planning is key, instead of throwing it all together. I feel the research task went well as I found many ideas I liked and could magpie for my own website whether it be for aesthetic reasons or practicality such as the timeline of projects in one website i saw. Doing this made me notice smaller things that affected the overall project and therefore made me have a sharper eye for details such as fonts. I feel my research could've been better if I had done a couple of things; search for more designs and include how effective and how much engagement each different web design got from the readers. This is because I could then see if there is any correlation between the designs that are popular within readers and possibly add these to my own webpage to increase my views and people who stay. To plan my webpage I first had to research how to do this. I watched videos on creating a wireframe which is essentially a simpler version of a final plan. I then designed a few website layout ideas on paper using a felt tip and decided on my favourite. When choosing colour schemes i watched a couple of colour theory videos and in the end decided on shades of green and a dark navy blue. When actually producing i did change from my wireframe as i added menus which meant a lot of the design id planned was not necessary. I started first with the basic shapes and titles and then when I was happy with fonts went back in and added pictures and decorative illustrations. I learnt a lot when planning and producing. I learnt not only what but how to create a wireframe and how simple they can be, and then had learnt about how to create a digital wireframe time effectively. While using Wix.com to create my website, not only did i learn the basic controls of the website, but how to create menus and the meaning of submenus. I was able to play around with the colour scheme and positions, learning that it doesn't always go how it was imagined on paper so there may be many revisions. I feel my ability to adapt to the program was a huge asset to me developing in this software. I was able to be faced with a problem and swiftly watch a video or more things around to figure out how to carry on. This proved helpful for when having to adjust everything in my header so i could fit in the menu. I feel the planning may have gone better if I had researched more and the production may have been helped if I spent more time experimenting and watching videos. This may have meant I was able to do much more advanced things and add to my website in a more creative way. I can confidently say I have created and planned my own portfolio website today. I have learnt how to use the software Wix.com effectively and now feel confident in the basics of its programme. I have also learnt how to use wireframe to plan a website and why it is useful for quick plans and ideas. Furthermore, I have learnt more about colour theory and how and what a menu is in a website and how they work and operate. Looking at my website now one of the things I think went well was my layout. I am proud of this because a lot of the websites I researched had a lot going on and felt hard to use, whereas I feel mine is easy to navigate with aesthetically pleasing colours and fun illustrations. I am pleased with both the clear title of my name so it is clear who the page belongs to and the logo I tried to create. I feel these both stand out and are simple but colour be easily recognised and remembered. To improve overall I would have done a few things. I would have made my logo appear more on my page- this way it would be more memorable. I would have also added some examples of some simple digital sketches I may have done or VFX work to give a taster. I should also edit my webpage in mobile mode more as after making a few alterations it was still rough around the edges, this would make it more accessible.
